Miffy Goes Mod

The artist formerly known as Miffy now goes by MIFF and wears designer clothes. I just hope they don't make her shave her fur and get too skinny. Next thing you know she'll be running around with Kate Moss and Perez Hilton will be drawing white dots on her nose. Quel tragique!

MORE Inspired Genius!

Can you even BELIEVE how great this stuff is? The shop is called Locher's and some of their selections are "No Time To Fuck", "I Hate Children" and "Will Fuck for Shoes". There are necklaces as well. So incredibly clever and really beautifully done -- it's like the natural progression of ideas -- it's like Subversive meets Sublime! Brava, Nicole!

Inspired Genius

It's moments of genius like this that make me insane! Thomas Allen takes old pulp fiction paperbacks, turns them into dioramas and photographs them. Brilliant!!

Colleen Baran - Bubble Series

I finally bought myself one of these bubble rings from Colleen Baran. It's more beautiful than the photos can show. What incredible talent to be able to make something so delicate but so strong. I'm totally digging it! You can buy her work at etsy.

Dita!
Last night was the Altoids / Bust craft evening at the Altoids Anti-Valentine pop-up store in NYC. THE Debbie Stoller was there to help with the needle threading and the knitting and keep the party rolling; Laurie Henzel ran the Old Maid game - in costume! Here's a link to photos of the evening taken by the Bust peeps.

This "craft" night was part of a week of events to promote the new chocolate covered Altoids. Opening night featured Dita von Teese in a bathtub full of chocolate-y mints. There were also week-long pop-up spaces in Chicago and Miami. Lots of Subversive Cross Stitch kits, SCS coasters and valentine swag were handed out at all three events.

Thanks again to Debbie Stoller and Laurie Henzel of BUST.

p.s. If you have any photos from the event, feel free to post them at the Subversive group at Flickr!

For Artists AND Crafters of all types

For the really bad days, for the days when you want to quit, when you feel like everything you do is shit, when you feel your self-esteem plummet, when you decide that you would rather wait tables for a living, when you start to think you will never make a living making art, when you are working on something and feel like you hate it more than you've ever hated anything in your life, when someone makes an offhand remark about your work and afterwards you feel dejected, when you wish you had gone to school for accounting, when you start to believe that maybe your family was right, when you want to lie in bed for a month and eat chips.

It pays to have a sense of humor.

The artist's survival kit offers some help.

We Have a Wiener!

Would you believe I won the Amy Sedaris Googly-Eye Craft Contest?? Sheesh, I need to start playing the lottery with this string of luck I've been having. First Truthiness Elf and now this! I was actually on the radio with Amy FREAKIN' Sedaris! I'm still stunned. And glad I didn't have to hear my own voice. I didn't have a chance to mention Subversive, I was too nervous, but I did manage to blurt out that I'm a "rabid fan". I'm sure that set well with her. D'oh!

Down 'n Dirty Screenprinting

VERY cool lesson on how to do some quickie screen printing without all the accoutrement that usually gets in my way of undertaking such a project. How freakin' cool! (though why you'd want a cow to be your friend - I'm not exactly sure on that point).

even a monkey can do it

from the bin

Dear Madam,
I saw an article in a newspaper yesterday about your work. I expected the products to have been made by a long-haired, dirty hippy but was instead confronted with the image of a middle-aged, greying woman.
You should be utterly ashamed of yourself for putting this filth back into society. Think about this.
Kevin ***** (29)

When I first read this, I honestly thought it was a compliment. I mean, my customers have a deliciously dry sense of humor. So I thanked him, of course. I'm not quite middle-aged, but I do embrace my gray rather than try to hide it. Plus, that's obviously better than a "long-haired, dirty hippy[SIC]", right? Yeay team!

But apparently he was serious (though I'm still not sure what the "(29)" implies - age?), and added, "Sorry I don't mean to be mean but think of the children growing up into this polluted society. What are we who are older giving them to walk into?! It's not right."

Hey, this is the second "complaint" email I've ever gotten! Wow - how to celebrate... Should I create a pattern that says "It's Not Right" or "Think of the Children"? My God, has Subversive Cross Stitch misrepresented itself as a role model to today's innocent Youth? I kind of thought I might get in trouble for my new line of four-letter words for Ages 3-5. Drat!

How about... "Subversive Cross Stitch: Putting the filth back into society". I think I can embrace that. Hello, trademark office?
