Paper animation by Saka Karakuri

Check out this paper-folding project from Brooklyn five and dime. They describe it as "Sad, but darkly humorous", so I just had to share it with you! Ha!

Dorky Hats!

Ever wonder what I used to do before this? I mean, in the realm of craftiness? May I present: Dorky Hats! It was just a hobby. I made hats for friends and gave each one a weird name... the hats, I mean, I didn't think that the actual hats were my friends, but you know what I mean. Heh.

RIP Betty Hutton
My favorite gal in all the world. The song is still here from a year ago (mp3) and if you really want to see Betty in action, check her out with Astaire. She will be missed!

Flickr: Photos from candyo

Subversive customer candyo had the brilliant idea to use felt as backdrop frames for her finished work -- is that clever or what? I thought it was such a great idea that I had to share. She even put magnets in some of them. Voila!
Photos are from candyo's Flickr site. See more ideas at the Subversive Flickr group page -- and send us your ideas!.

Remind me to get a bird

Spike spent months watching her owner Sandra Battye creating patterns before picking up a needle in her beak herself. "One day I just sat and didn't stitch. It seemed to frustrate her. Then suddenly she picked up the needle in her beak and began cross-stitching herself. I was staggered. Now I can't stop her. She still gets a bit confused at how the patterns work but she is very good at pulling and pushing the needle through the fabric."

dit dit dit on your mobile phone

Louisa Bufardeci has created a unique blend of embroidery, technology, and information visualization ~ here is an example from 13 captured telephone conversations - all one minute long, 2006, machine embroideries. Perhaps the perfect installation for a sound studio waiting room? Visually the ability to visualize these in such a tactile manner is fascinating, and equally interesting are her embroidered portraits of Anti-War Speeches.

Laura Splan, you got some 'splanin' to do!

"...keeps the user warm with their blood"??? Pardon me while I run screaming from the room - aah!
Actually, you should really explore her site, she's got some very unusual incredible work.

ze goes bye-bye
Don't forget to stop by zefrank this week - the show was only a year-long experiment in terror and these are the last few episodes. Today, a medley.
Cupcake Bitches!

From the Altoids party in NYC: cupcakes were served by Danielle and Julia, all dolled up in their custom Subversive aprons! (their phrase, not mine - I'd never call someone who was serving me a cupcake a bitch! hee)

"Full-Blown Cult Figure"?!

Wow, I finally made NUTS magazine! I'm right above the story about the four-legged duckling. I'm not sure if my mom is crying because she's happy or just downright proud. Hmmm.
Crafts in Space!

Apparently someone is selling virtual Subversive Cross Stitch pillows in Second Life. Now, that's a weird problem to have... or is it a problem? I'm not sure whether to be amused, concerned or (virtually) litigious. Mostly I'm just amused, because it's so out of left field.
